Alive Outside Adventure Series:
Outdoor Leadership Training
for Underserved Youth

The Alive Outside Adventure Series is a comprehensive outdoor leadership training program designed to build confidence, resilience, and wilderness skills in youth from partner organizations including Youth Alliance, Fresh Lifelines for Youth, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley. This progressive wilderness education experience combines guided backpacking instruction, hands-on survival skills development, and career pathway exposure to help participants reclaim public lands as places of healing, identity, and personal growth while developing environmental stewardship values and outdoor leadership capabilities. Since program launch, the Alive Outside Adventure Series has served youth from underserved communities in Santa Clara County who face significant barriers to accessing nature experiences including transportation limitations, financial constraints, safety concerns, and lack of culturally relevant outdoor programming. Many participants have never visited local parks or preserves despite living nearby, contributing to health disparities, environmental illiteracy, and limited opportunities for healing and leadership development in natural settings.

Program Mission & Community Impact

Addressing Critical Barriers to Wilderness Access

The Alive Outside Adventure Series serves youth ages 12-18 from Title I schools, court-involved backgrounds, and underserved communities who typically lack access to outdoor leadership training and wilderness education opportunities. Through strategic partnerships with Youth Alliance, Fresh Lifelines for Youth, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley, this progressive program delivers comprehensive outdoor education that would otherwise be unavailable due to financial constraints, transportation barriers, and limited community resources addressing the unique needs of underserved youth populations.

Target Population & Community Need

Primary Participants: Youth ages 12-18 affiliated with partner organizations, focusing on middle school, junior high, and high school students ready for deeper nature immersion and mentorship experiences. Community Demographics: Participants primarily represent youth from Title I schools, court-involved backgrounds, and underserved communities facing systemic barriers to outdoor access and environmental education opportunities. Access Barriers Addressed: Transportation limitations preventing nature preserve access, financial constraints eliminating outdoor education participation, safety concerns in unfamiliar outdoor environments, lack of culturally relevant programming designed for diverse youth populations, limited exposure to conservation career pathways and environmental stewardship opportunities.

Program Impact Metrics

Since Program Launch: Progressive outdoor leadership training delivered through established community partnerships, comprehensive wilderness skills development for youth ages 12-18, complete equipment and resource provision eliminating financial barriers, trauma-informed outdoor education with certified guides and Sacred Recovery Coach support, Leave No Trace ethics education with official certification, career pathway exposure in conservation and outdoor leadership fields. Partnership Expansion: Supported by Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority grant funding, enabling AOAS delivery for Boys & Girls Club and Youth Alliance participants, expanding access and deepening impact across both established partner organizations while maintaining high safety and quality standards.

Four-Phase
Wilderness Education Experience

Program Development Approach

The Alive Outside Adventure Series follows a carefully designed progression across four distinct phases, building participant confidence and wilderness competency while fostering trust, belonging, and outdoor leadership skills through progressive challenges that respect individual readiness levels and cultural backgrounds.

Phase 1:
Family Engagement & Trust Building

Bilingual Parent Meeting: Comprehensive family introduction to Saved By Nature, detailed safety protocol review, and trust-building foundation for overnight camping experiences. This essential foundation meeting ensures parents understand program structure, safety measures, expected outcomes, cultural considerations, and family engagement opportunities while addressing concerns and building confidence in the outdoor leadership training approach.

Phase 2:
Orientation Hike

Five-Hour Field Experience: Guided hike at local parks or preserves including Rancho Cañada del Oro that introduces backpacking basics, campsite etiquette, essential plant identification including poison oak recognition, and Leave No Trace ethics fundamentals. Participants begin developing outdoor awareness, safety skills, and environmental stewardship values while building confidence in natural settings with certified guide instruction and peer support.

Phase 3:
Preparation Hike & Skills Development

Comprehensive Gear Training: Skills-focused session covering packing techniques, stove and food safety protocols, proper boot fitting, and equipment familiarity. Staff distribute all necessary camping equipment while participants practice essential wilderness skills, develop outdoor competency, and prepare mentally and physically for the culminating overnight backpacking experience through hands-on instruction and confidence-building activities.

Phase 4:
Overnight Backpacking Adventure

Culminating Wilderness Experience: Two-day, one-night camping adventure at locations including Henry W. Coe State Park where participants apply learned skills through hiking challenges, tent setup practice, outdoor cooking instruction, recreation activities, and personal reflection opportunities. Youth experience profound healing, connection, and empowerment through immersive nature experiences that many describe as life-changing and transformative.
