About the Event

Join Saved by Nature, Latino Outdoors and California State Parks for an inclusive nature hike through a majestic old-growth redwood forest at one of California's most diverse state parks, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park! This unique ecosystem of ancient coast redwood trees has captured the interest and dedication of many people.

Our hike will begin with a 0.8-mile flat Redwood Loop Trail. Here you will discover survival adaptations of the coast redwood and encounter “The Giant”, which is the park’s largest tree approximately 277 feet tall and about 1,500 years old. We will also take a flashlight and step inside the famous Fremont Tree.

After lunch, the hike continues! We’ll hop on the River Trail to look for rainbow trout in the San Lorenzo River on our way to relax at Cable Car Beach. We’ll then return on Pipeline Road under the shade of skyscraping redwoods.

About 5% of our original coast redwood range still exist. The Santa Cruz Mountains' vicinity to the Pacific Ocean creates a fog belt and climate that provides crucial moisture needed to sustain these trees. Henry Cowell provides a rare opportunity to see these incredible giants at their best.

Please bring a lunch, water, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, hat and/or sunblock.

Granola bars and fruit will be provided by Latino Outdoors during lunch.

To remove barriers and make nature more accessible to everyone, the $10 parking fee is being paid for by Saved by Nature through a grant from REI.

Be sure to join Saved by Nature and Latino Outdoors for our 2nd Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration coming up on September 25th, 2021.

Become a member of Saved by Nature or make a donation to Latino Outdoors to support our missions.

This hike was made possible through a partnership with Saved by Nature, Latino Outdoors, Santa Cruz District of CA State Parks and REI.
