Current Access Barriers & Limitations

Understanding Barriers to Nature Access

Youth from under-resourced communities face multiple barriers including; Distance and transportation challenges. Cultural exclusion due to underrepresentation in outdoor spaces. Language gaps with materials not available in preferred languages. Limited outdoor family networks. Resource gaps for gear and guidance. Low awareness of existing opportunities. These barriers contribute to a nature gap that limits access to the physical, emotional, and developmental benefits of outdoor engagement.

Partnership-Based Access Model

Our youth development programs currently operate exclusively through partner organizations, creating access barriers for families not connected to these specific community networks. This partnership-based model, while ensuring cultural competency and sustained support, limits our ability to serve the broader community of youth who would benefit most from transformative connections with nature.

Identified Access Barriers

Youth must be members of Boys & Girls Clubs, Youth Alliance, or Fresh Lifelines for Youth. Limited geographic reach through existing partner locations. Capacity constraints based on partner organization enrollment limits. No direct enrollment option for families seeking immediate access to programming.

Impact of Current Limitations

Youth access limited to those connected to specific partner organizations. Geographic constraints based on partner organization service areas. Missed opportunities to reach youth who would benefit most from therapeutic wilderness experiences. Reduced organizational capacity to respond to community demand for outdoor education programs.

The Story
Behind Our Boys & Girls Club Partnership

Richard Tejeda Historical Photo - Boys & Girls Club Christmas Dinner 1989

Nine-year-old Richard Tejeda sits with his older brother at the back right of the table during a Boys & Girls Club Christmas dinner at D'Angelo's Italian Restaurant. Fred McCasland, the Unit Director of the South Side Boys & Girls Club (visible in the blue and white tracksuit at left), organized this special Christmas celebration for the youth in his program. For Richard, this wasn't just dinner - it was his first time ever eating at an Italian restaurant, his first taste of community beyond his own family. Fred had brought the kids here for Christmas dinner and gifts, creating magic for children who rarely experienced such generosity. "It was my first time I believe eating at an Italian restaurant. I was 10 years old or 9 in the photo," Richard recalls. This simple act of kindness - being taken somewhere special, being seen and valued by caring adults like Fred McCasland - planted seeds that would grow into something much larger. Today, as founder of Saved By Nature, Richard ensures that other youth from underserved communities experience their own "first times" - first camping trips, first mountain hikes, first nights under the stars. He continues the legacy of transformative community care that Fred McCasland modeled all those years ago. Sometimes the most transformative moments look ordinary from the outside. But for a young boy learning that community cares, this Christmas dinner became the foundation for a lifetime dedicated to giving back. Fred McCasland's leadership created ripples that are still spreading today, touching thousands of youth through Saved By Nature's environmental justice programming.

A Personal Testament to Boys & Girls Club Impact

Growing up on the other side of the train tracks, Richard's life was forever changed when his mom introduced him to the Boys & Girls Club at age 10. Working at the Davis Jr. High cafeteria, she brought him to the South Side Boys & Girls Club, where Unit Director Fred McCasland created a safe, vibrant space for neighborhood kids. Despite limited resources, Fred's dedication ensured the children had a positive environment, even stepping in to protect them from negative influences like gangs and drugs. Richard fondly recalls running excitedly to the club, where Fred's leadership led him to play flag football, softball, basketball, and even become a champion ping-pong player. At Christmastime, Fred brought joy by taking the kids to dinners and giving them gifts from Santa. One summer, Richard attended a camping trip at Yosemite's San Jose Family Camp—an experience so transformative that he vowed to one day return with his own family. By eighth grade, Richard faced growing pressures from peers, his neighborhood, and even family. Fred, having firsthand knowledge of street life from his own Eastside San Jose upbringing, took Richard aside, warning him about the consequences of his choices and encouraging him to stay involved with the club. Despite Fred's wisdom, Richard gradually drifted away, and Fred's warnings unfortunately came true. Now, years later, Richard has come full circle. For more than a decade, he has dedicated himself to providing opportunities for youth through month-long summer day camps, after-school programs, science clubhouse visits, and the launch of the Summer Science Project. When asked why he pours his heart into these initiatives for the Boys & Girls Club, Richard reflected, "Through the years I have realized that I grew up in a low-income community, the fact that I still had a decision, and that I made the wrong one. I do this because I want to be part of providing a choice to the kids, like Fred did for me." Richard's story is a testament to the power of mentorship and the lasting impact of providing young people with choices and positive influences.

Evidence-Based
Therapeutic Wilderness Programs & Outdoor Therapeutic Program Methodology

Core Methodology

Our outdoor education programs utilize evidence-based therapeutic wilderness approaches that recognize nature as a powerful catalyst for personal transformation, community healing, and environmental stewardship development across all demographic groups we serve.

Intentional Design for Community Healing

Every program component is structured to promote healing and personal growth through carefully designed natural environment experiences. Our outdoor therapeutic programs create safe spaces where participants develop confidence and resilience while building environmental awareness.

Trauma-Informed Community Engagement

All programming incorporates trauma-informed practices within therapeutic wilderness frameworks, ensuring outdoor education experiences become sources of empowerment rather than stress. This approach is particularly important for underserved populations and youth from challenging backgrounds.

Mindful Environmental Connection

Central to our approach is mindful engagement with natural environments through guided meditation, sensory awareness exercises, and reflective practices that foster mental clarity and emotional regulation while building deep environmental awareness.

Fog and Nature

Critical Funding Needs For
Program Expansion

Sunset Over Trees

Mission:
Eliminate Access Barriers
to Natural Spaces
for Underserved Communities

Current Challenge

Our youth development programs currently operate exclusively through partner organizations, creating access barriers for families not connected to these specific community networks. This partnership-based model, while ensuring cultural competency and sustained support, limits our ability to serve the broader community of youth who would benefit most from transformative connections with nature.

Vision for Impact

Direct access to outdoor therapeutic programs in natural spaces without membership requirements. Transportation and support removing barriers that prevent underserved communities from experiencing nature. Programming developed to ensure all community members can access and benefit from natural environments. Expected Outcome: Direct access for any youth who would benefit from therapeutic wilderness experiences in natural spaces.

Community Need Evidence

Boys & Girls Club membership is based on referral and need assessment rather than open enrollment, creating a gap for youth who would benefit from outdoor programming but don't meet BGC's specific referral criteria. Research shows communities of color and low-income families have historically faced barriers to outdoor education opportunities. Direct enrollment model would align with community equity goals and remove institutional barriers. Current partnership requirements limit organizational ability to serve the full spectrum of Bay Area youth who could benefit from nature-based programming.

Organizational Infrastructure Development

Staffing Needs for Expanded Community Access

Nonprofit development director to secure sustainable funding streams. Community outreach coordinators to build relationships and remove access barriers. Additional program staff to bring outdoor therapeutic programs to underserved communities. Specialized therapeutic wilderness staff for enhanced programming quality in natural environments.

Infrastructure Requirements

Community partnership development focused on nature access equity. Program adaptation ensuring all community members can experience transformative connections with nature.

Expected Outcomes

Sustainable programming model providing underserved communities direct access to natural spaces. Enhanced program quality through culturally responsive approaches in natural environments. Expanded reach serving communities historically excluded from nature experiences. Complete elimination of access barriers preventing transformative connections with nature.

Investment Impact for Underserved Communities

Community-Centered Impact

Direct access to natural spaces for communities historically excluded from outdoor education. Cost-effective programming removing transportation and economic barriers to nature experiences. Documented long-term behavioral changes creating sustainable community benefits through nature connection. Programming model ensuring families can access transformative natural environments regardless of economic barriers.

Measurable Community Transformation

Participant retention rates exceeding 85% across all outdoor therapeutic programs in natural settings. Environmental advocacy engagement increasing significantly through direct nature experiences. Community leadership development with ongoing environmental involvement. Youth career pathway development with increased environmental education opportunities through nature connection.

Sustainable Community Change

Participants organizing independent environmental stewardship activities. Family integration of environmental practices and advocacy through nature experiences. Community networks forming around environmental protection and nature access equity. Documented improvements in mental health and community connection through therapeutic wilderness experiences. Reduced barriers to nature access for historically excluded populations.

Sustainable Program Growth

Program Development Strategy

Phase 1: Direct programming providing underserved communities access to natural spaces without barriers. Phase 2: Expanded programming ensuring all communities can experience transformative connections with nature. Phase 3: Community-led environmental stewardship with local leadership development through ongoing nature experiences.

Long-Term Community Impact Goals

Direct access to therapeutic wilderness programming and natural spaces for all Bay Area youth regardless of membership, location, or economic status. Community-led environmental advocacy networks rooted in personal connections to nature. Regional model for equity-centered outdoor education programs connecting historically excluded populations to natural environments.
