Summer Science Project: STEM Summer Programs for Youth Development
Saved By Nature provides comprehensive environmental education through the Summer Science Project during the summer months for youth at participating Boys & Girls Clubhouses across the South Bay and Peninsula. These STEM summer programs combine live animal presentations, hands-on science activities, and take-home projects to foster scientific literacy, environmental stewardship, and career pathway awareness. Since launching this program in 2019, over 4,230 youth have experienced transformative connections with environmental science through our summer enrichment program with all materials included.

What Makes This STEM Summer Program Different From Traditional Science Summer Camps
Unlike traditional science summer camps, the Summer Science Project brings together five respected environmental agencies to deliver specialized expertise across watershed science, wildlife biology, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem conservation. Youth don't just learn about nature—they interact with live animals, build projects to take home, and explore the interconnected systems that sustain life in the San Francisco Bay ecosystem. This collaborative approach means participants benefit from the specialized knowledge of multiple expert organizations, all working together to create a comprehensive environmental education experience that would be impossible for any single program to deliver alone.
Inside Our Summer Enrichment Program: Seven Weeks of Discovery
Seven Weeks of STEM Summer Programs
Through Boys & Girls Clubs
For seven weeks each summer, over 800 youth across seven clubhouses participate in daily one-hour environmental education sessions during their regular summer camp programming. Saved By Nature rotates to a different clubhouse location each week, delivering specialized STEM programming as part of the Boys & Girls Club's comprehensive 8am-6pm summer camp experience. Each day features a different partner agency bringing their unique expertise and programming directly to participants—no transportation required, no additional fees for materials or instruction.

Monday
Valley Water
Valley Water leads the salmon survival obstacle course where kids participate in a hands-on experience simulating real-life challenges salmon face during migration. This interactive activity includes "jumping" over waterfalls, dodging predators, and navigating fishing nets while learning how salmon travel from spawning grounds to the ocean and back. Participants learn salmon lifecycle stages and develop understanding of species adaptation and ecosystem interconnectedness.

Wednesday
Garden to Table
Garden to Table Silicon Valley guides kids in setting up a large worm composting bin that stays on-site, turning food scraps into rich soil over time. Participants learn how worms transform waste into "black gold" and how that compost supports gardens and outdoor spaces they'll continue exploring all summer.

Friday
WERC
Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (WERC) brings live animal ambassadors—real owls, snakes, and other rescued wildlife—while kids learn how these animals survive in the wild. Through hands-on activities and storytelling, participants discover how to protect habitats and safely coexist with native species in their own neighborhoods.

Tuesday
Saved By Nature
Saved By Nature leads exploration of a giant map of California's bioregions, discovering how Santa Clara County contains multiple habitats thanks to its location near the Diablo Range and Santa Cruz Mountains. Kids identify native animals they've seen near home, touch real pelts and skulls, feel rubber animal feet, and cast their favorite track in plaster while exploring tule elk antlers, deer antlers, and a life-size replica of a mountain lion's head.

Thursday
SF Bay Wildlife Society
SF Bay Wildlife Society or U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service presents interactive storytelling and visual exploration about how wildlife refuges protect endangered species and habitats. Kids learn how conservation efforts help animals like the snowy plover, California tiger salamander, and salt marsh harvest mouse survive in the wild.
Youth Skills Development
Participants build scientific literacy and environmental awareness through direct observation, hands-on experimentation, and real-world application of scientific concepts. The program introduces career pathways in wildlife biology, environmental science, watershed management, and conservation—fields where Bay Area youth are significantly underrepresented. Beyond academic skills, participants develop environmental stewardship values and a personal connection to the natural world that research shows leads to healthier lifestyles, stronger community engagement, and increased advocacy for environmental protection.

Partner Organizations Behind This Environmental Science Summer Camp
Our Collaborative Delivery Model for Environmental Science Summer Camps
Saved By Nature leverages strategic partnerships to maximize educational impact while building organizational infrastructure for expanded programming capacity. This collaborative framework enables immediate access to transformative environmental education through established community networks, rather than requiring families to wait for future organizational development. Working alongside trusted youth-serving institutions allows us to focus resources on exceptional program content and expert instruction while partner organizations provide essential family support, community connection, and operational infrastructure that would take years to develop independently. This model reflects our commitment to meeting families within existing support systems rather than creating parallel services, ensuring youth benefit from comprehensive wraparound support that extends far beyond environmental education programming.
