Fort Tejon was first garrisoned by the United States Army on August 10, 1854 and was abandoned ten years later on September 11, 1864. Built shortly after the fort was garrisoned, Barracks Number 1 is one of only two standing structures at Fort Tejon which can be attributed to the period of army occupation. It is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Southern California.
